It is very difficult to produce an authentic and exhaustive checklist of birds of Keoladeo and Band Baretha. Many bird-watchers, tour operators and ornithologists visit this area frequently and every publication has one or two 'new records'. However a visitor may not find all the species here as some species have been seen just once or in a particular year. For still others no authentic information is available but they have found place in almost every publication for the park. In the first attempt a basic checklist is presented which will be improved/updated from time to time.

The wild life of Bandh Baretha includes mammals like Sambhar, Chital, Blue Bull, Wild Boar, Hyena, and Leopard. There is magnificent presence of avian life including some 200 species of wild birds including some rarest of the species. The Bandh Baretha invariably attracts a large number of birders due to its exquisite diversity of birds and other wild life.
We hope that this checklist will serve several purposes. First, we hope the checklist will help bird enthusiasts decide to visit Keoladeo and Band Baretha. A visit to this unique area can be a rewarding experience for both the amateur and expert birdwatcher. Second, we hope that this checklist will provide potential visitors with a guide to birds that might occur in a region during a particular season. We hope that this checklist will stimulate and encourage visitors to this area to help improve the accuracy and completeness of the checklist.
